Leaders: Let's Help the 1 Million Vets Coming Home Get a Job

Returning Home

Soldier with Leadership SkillsComing Home

As the United States continues to draw down forces in Afghanistan and Iraq, the White House estimates that over one million veterans with great leadership skills will return to the civilian workforce over the next five years.

In addition to high unemployment rates, veterans are encountering tough resistance in the job market.

Lack of civilian certifications and consistent hiring bias are just a few of the challenges they face.

Veterans Make Excellent Employees

  • Veterans show up
  • Veterans are punctual
  • Veterans follow direction
  • Veterans get the job done
  • Veterans are ready to work

Most importantly they have a sense of loyality and honor - the kind of people you want on your team!

The Challenge

In this brief video, author and consultant, Kirk Hallowell explains the challenges that veterans are consistently facing in their return to the civilian job market.

This video also introduces an innovative, inexpensive program designed to help veterans understand how corporations source employees and specific ways to access “hidden” job opportunities.

High Praise to you Dr. Hallowell. I want to know more and will get in touch. Facts are today's military personnel are better at soft skills than people realize. Agree, certification is a problem, but with good resume' points, it can be over come.

I like it.

Thanks, David.

Actually the big problem with certification is at the HR level of most organizations. The people making the decisions are simply checking the Six Sigma or the SAP experience box. Unfortunately vets don't get to explain their side as they don't get invited to interview. Employer education is key!

I have to agree that employer education is the key. I have had recruiters tell me "As you know your active military work hasn’t specifically used your technical degree consistently, which makes you a less experienced than other candidates who may apply." I have 2 engineering degrees and 6 years military experience in engineering including $4M in contract supervision and also top level management of construction projects employing hundreds of personnel. How am I supposed to overcome this sort of bias?

Dr. Hallowell a great article. Thanks for recognizing how important our returning heroes are to us. Do you have any way to learn what or how employers can do to source these veterans?
